Tasmania has a cool, temperate maritime climate with four distinct seasons. The pleasant Summer season lasts from December to February when the average maximum sea temperature is 21 °C (70 °F). Autumn is from March until May, when many European deciduous trees shed their leaves. The winter months are between June and August and are generally the wettest and coolest months, with the high country receiving significant snowfalls. Winter maximum temperatures are 12 °C (54 °F) in coastal areas, but inland the temperatures can fall well below zero. Spring, from September until November, is generally the windiest time of year. The highest temperature recorded is 42.2 C (108 F) in 2009 and the lowest recorded temperature is -13 C (8.6 F) in 1983.
